Natural, Traditional & Budget-Friendly

Gravel driveways have been a British classic for generations. They're one of the most affordable surfacing options, naturally free-draining, and offer a unique crunch-under-tyre character that many homeowners love.

A professionally installed gravel driveway is much more than loose stones dumped on the ground. We excavate and prepare a proper sub-base, install edging to contain the gravel, lay a weed-suppressing membrane, and then spread your chosen aggregate to the correct depth for a neat, stable surface.

  • Most affordable driveway surface
  • Naturally free-draining — no drainage needed
  • Wide range of aggregate colours and sizes
  • Good security — you can hear vehicles arriving

Key Facts

Drainage

Gravel is naturally permeable — water drains straight through. No additional drainage needed, and fully SuDS compliant for front garden installations.

Aggregate Choices

Choose from golden flint, Cotswold buff, Yorkshire cream, slate chippings, granite, and more. 10mm, 14mm, or 20mm sizes for different looks and stability.

Lifespan

Indefinite — gravel doesn't wear out. Top up every few years to maintain the desired depth and appearance. The sub-base beneath should last 20+ years.

Maintenance

Rake occasionally to level, top up aggregate every 3–5 years, and keep edges clear of soil. A weed membrane beneath prevents most weed growth. Annual weed spot treatment recommended.

Security

A natural security feature — anyone approaching the house creates an audible crunch. Combined with good lighting, this is an effective deterrent.

Suitability

Ideal for larger, flat or gently sloping driveways. Less suitable for very steep gradients (gravel can migrate downhill). Not recommended for areas with heavy tree cover.
