Why Choose Block Paving?

Block paving gives you unrivalled design flexibility. Individual blocks are laid by hand in your chosen pattern — herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave, or something bespoke — using colours that complement your home's brickwork and surroundings.

It's also one of the most practical surfaces. If a block gets stained or damaged, you replace that one block — not the whole driveway. And if you ever need access to underground pipes or cables, the blocks can be lifted and re-laid seamlessly.

  • Thousands of colour & pattern combinations
  • Individual blocks can be replaced if damaged
  • Lifted & re-laid for underground access
  • Excellent grip in wet weather
  • Adds real kerb appeal and property value

Everything You Need to Know

Durability

When properly installed with a quality sub-base, block paving easily lasts 20–25+ years. Individual blocks can be replaced if damaged without affecting the whole surface.

Lifespan

Expect 20–30 years from a professionally installed block paved driveway. Regular cleaning and occasional re-sanding of joints will keep it looking fresh.

Maintenance

Low maintenance — brush occasionally, jet wash annually, and re-sand joints every few years. A sealant can be applied to protect against staining and moss.

Colour Options

Available in reds, brindle, charcoal, buff, grey, and multi-colour blends. Choose from standard, tumbled, or textured finishes to match your home's character.

Suitability

Ideal for residential driveways of all sizes and gradients. Suitable for new builds and period properties alike. Not recommended for very steep inclines without additional retention.

Drainage

Standard block paving requires a slight fall to channel water to drainage points. Permeable block paving options are also available for SuDS compliance on front gardens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a block paving driveway cost? +

Costs vary depending on size, ground conditions, block choice, and drainage requirements. As a guide, expect £80–£120 per square metre for a full professional installation including excavation, sub-base, edging, and laying. We provide a detailed written quote after your free site visit.

How long does installation take? +

A typical single driveway takes 5–7 working days. This includes excavation, sub-base preparation, edging installation, block laying, and joint sanding. Larger or more complex projects may take longer — we'll give you a clear timeline in your quote.

Do I need planning permission for a block paved driveway? +

Not if the surface is permeable (or if you install adequate drainage to a soakaway or garden). Since 2008, UK regulations require any new or replacement front driveway over 5m² to be permeable or to drain water within the property boundary. We'll ensure your installation is fully compliant.

Will weeds grow through block paving? +

When professionally installed with a proper sub-base and jointing sand, weeds are minimal. Any that do appear in the joints can be easily removed. We can also apply a sealant that inhibits weed growth and moss.
